Magers Games Library

So, we currently have a total of £127.50 in the kitty. I hope that there will be a few stragglers joining the GM list in the next couple of weeks so this may rise slightly.
We need to reserve a small amount of this to pay for our domain name re-registration later this year, say £10.

So that leaves us with £117.50 to buy games and some kind of storage facility.

Stewart has mentioned trying to pick up some bargains at this week's auction. I guess this is a good idea, but we need to get a general consensus on what types of games we would like in the library.
Personally, I think mainly filler games would be a good idea (even more so now that Martin Wallace has donated a few meatier games) but I guess that can be discussed on Tuesday (although I won't be there, so could someone post the results of any discussion here?!)

If you decide we go to auction and no-one can stump up the money in advance, contact me and we'll sort something out. Otherwise, I'll bring the cash with me the next time I'm at Magers.

Has anyone got any further suggestions about storage? Type / cost / sourcing it?

Gavin: Gettysburg retails at around £30, so do you have anything that you could trade for it? Or would you just prefer to buy it from us?

I definitely agree that fillers are the way to go, but we possibly could use some light yet longer games too.

regarding storage.. perhaps some sort of lockable box... or even an old suitcase with a combination lock. We're not going to have that many games, and fillers don't take up much space.

I picked up 4 games for the games library at the auction this weekend. Not as good a haul as we had hoped, as some of the games I thought would be suitable (Ca$h n Gun$; Endeavor [sic]; Zooloretto; Adventurers and a few others) were bid up above what I thought we should pay for them (all went for a bit more than £20 each). All the games that we bid on, I discussed with Stew beforehand and we agreed how much we should bid for on each.

    Games I did get:
Carcassonne Discovery - this was the only carc on offer, and I thought it would good to have one of the carc games - £11
    Dungeoneer - a dungeon crawl card game - £5
Nanuk - a bluffing/auction 'party' game for 5-8 which Mary and I have played with 8 down in Stoke and enjoyed. £5
Caesar and Cleopatra - this was sold with Nanuk, but is a 2 player card game, so may not be suitable for the group

If the general consensus is that any of these games are not suitable for the group, I am happy to buy them into my personal collection for the price paid at the auction.

Stew also suggested that if any of us are going to Essen this year, they should go with a list of games to try and get for the group from the deep discounted stands there. a lot of the games that are 2 years old or more get sold at quite discounted prices, so we should nominate and vote on some games to look for at Essen.

Unfortunately I won't be there this week, as we are having some family round for pancakes, but I should be there next week and I will bring the games then and we can decide what to do with them.

With some money still in the kitty, do we want to think of things to get for the collection? Things like Saboteur 2 as an example. Shadow hunters could be another, but there are several copies already within the magers possibly 4 or 5, so that may not be such a good example.

Andy has already posted that we could try to get things from the deep discounters at Essen in October, what is on the stands cannot be predicted and it will have to be a decision made at Essen.

Paul Lister of www.boardgameguru.co.uk often puts older/excess stock up for sale at good prices. Feel free to purchase and if you wish to combine for free postage, put in delivery method 'Collection in London' then enter in free text box, 'ship along with Simon/Chooi's order to Chorley'. This is mostly Simon Dunkley's regular order which I occasionally hitch-hike on and it only ships when it hits £150 ie free shipping. I can then collect and bring to next Mager's meeting.

    Check out current list

if any orders made, drop me a message so that I look out for it to collect. cheers

This might be worth posting here too, in case there's anything we want for the club...

Thats a great spot Andy. We could find some gems on there.

Anyone had any ideas on what we could add to the collection?

Did we get permission to have a cabinet at HMCC?

I've been looking on the freecycle site Stew mentioned and there are possibilities, I will also be able to modify any I get to be secure.

  • GrimwoldGrimwold July 2011

It was a while ago now, but I'm pretty sure Philip checked and said we could have a games cabinet there. probably best to confirm with him though.

Thanks Andy I spoke with Philip and yes we can, but they want to know the dimensions first which makes getting a freebie (don't confuse with Vodafone advert) from freecycle a little harder.
